At The Lanterns Studio Theatre
Welcome to the another entry in our performance journal here at the Lanterns Studio Theatre where we aim to keep you up to date with the news, progress and upcoming programmes for East London's Isle of Dogs newest performance venue. The 2016 Season is now in full swing, with everything from cutting edge Music Recording Sessions to London’s latest West End Hits on offer over the coming months.
- Benedict Cumberbatch in rehearsal for “Hamlet”
Nominated for 4 Olivier Awards this year.
We are now well into 2016, and with Summer nearly upon us, and Christmas long behind us, it is once again a time to look ahead to the many exciting visitors coming to the Lanterns Studio Theatre, and also look back on some of the artists whose work will be in the public eye over the coming months.
“Hamlet” Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciarán Hinds, Leo Bill and Jim Norton among others, debuted in late 2015 at the Barbican Theatre. Directed by Lyndsey Turner, “Hamlet’s” highly secretive rehearsal process was one of the most high profile and exciting rehearsal residency’s to take place at the Lanterns Studio Theatre in 2015. The production received rave reviews and has now gone on to be nominated for four Olivier Awards in 2016. During their time here, the cast got to know many of the on-site staff, with some of the more well-known Film Stars catching a few fellow visitors to the Lanterns, (and fans) off guard! The Lanterns Studio Theatre wishes the cast of “Hamlet,” good luck with their upcoming Olivier nominations, and we do hope to welcome back some of the cast working on other projects in the near future.
Another visitor to the space was singer and recording artist Suzanna van Moyland. Suzanna recently recorded and filmed tracks for her latest album, "Genre Defiant," here at the Lanterns Studio Theatre, with her chosen pianist Roman Gomez. Suzanna's music is known for being somewhere between Classical and Rock, Chanson and the Avant Garde. Her lyrics are poems, true stories - mini epics with elements of noir, Sci-Fi and magical realism. After working at the venue, Suzanna had this to say about her recording session and her time spent here at the Lanterns Studio Theatre;
"I sought a black space, good acoustics and a concert grand with a bright (as opposed to a sweet) top end. The Lanterns was exactly right - both for the recordings and for the simultaneous filming of 'City Love Song'.
Suzanna is one of many musicians who filmed and recorded at the Lanterns Studio Theatre in 2015, utilising the venues Yamaha Ciii Full Grand Piano which is a musical rarity that many artists from across the UK and Europe travel to use. The Lanterns would like to thank Suzanna for choosing our venue to work on her latest album; wishing her the best of luck with the imminent release of her upcoming Album. Looking ahead to 2016, several of London’s biggest shows will be visiting the Lanterns Studio Theatre throughout the year. Playful Productions “Groundhog Day” is gearing up for its run of London shows later this year. Part of Matthew Warchus' inaugural season at The Old Vic, this brand new musical adaptation of the film is directed by Matthew Warchus with a book by original screenwriter Danny Rubin, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and choreography by Peter Darling.
- “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is yet another Play that will be rehearsing for its London run of shows at the Lanterns Studio Theatre
The National Theatre will also be making its first visit to the Lanterns Studio Theatre, rehearsing its award winning production of “A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” (probably the longest title I’ve ever had to type!). In 2013, the production won 7 out of the 8 Olivier Award Categories it was nominated for, and has been a hit ever since. The Lanterns Studio Theatre looks forward to welcoming the cast, crew and even some of the four legged friends that star in the show!
