At The Lanterns Studio Theatre
Welcome to the Fourth entry in our performance journal here at the Lanterns Studio Theatre where we aim to keep you up to date with the news, progress and upcoming programmes for East London's Isle of Dogs newest performance venue. We have a host of exciting Projects lined up for 2013, some of which I can already talk about…
The Lanterns Studio Theatre is now fully kitted out and ready to accommodate a whole range of performances, workshops and classes over the coming 2013 season. We are delighted to welcome the East London Pilates classes to the space on a full time basis, with Founder Kelly Wooton and her team bringing beginner to advanced level Pilates and Yoga courses and memberships to our ever growing timetable. Although East London Pilates classes are booked though a memebership scheme, be sure to check out the website for the next drop in classes if you fancy giving it a go. www.EastLondonPilates.co.uk Although it seems like Christmas was a long while ago, the Lanterns production of “Oliver!” featuring both students of the Lanterns School of the Performing Arts and several Professional acts was met with raptuous applause to a sold out crowd seated on the Lanterns Studio Theatres new Seating Rostrum. The show featured a whole range of ![]() acts including new works from Guy Salim and his troupe of Dancers, an Accordion/Violin Duo courtesy of Philippa Mo and Milos Milivojevic, Piano solos from our resident Concert Pianist Viktor Sugeng and classic songs of the Musical from both Claire Louise Auguste and West End Star Amy West. The evening was also lit up by the beautifully painted Mural commissioned by Lanterns for this particular production, with a collaborative themed work created by Frank Creber and Ann- Marie Fairbrother. Frank Creber is also responsible for the Artwork already found in the Theatre including the individual Harlequin figures framed around the space. The Show also featured the first piece of Professional level Classical Ballet performed in the Studio Theatre setting, danced by Constance Devernay and Jamiel Laurence, both dancers of Scottish Ballet. The Lanterns Studio Theatre thanks Scottish Ballet for releasing the dancers for this engagement, which has given East London its first glimpse of what the new Harlequin Floor installed in the Lanterns Studio Theatre can bring to the island. March has already seen several firsts for the Venue, including BBC & Sky News press coverage for the launch of the Barclays Bank “Bridges into Work” scheme at their National event day “The Big Apprenticeship Conversation.” This event which took place in conjunction with several other network linked venues across the UK on 11th March which brought together the country’s youth to discuss their working future, with Guest Speaker Jim Fitzpatrick, Labour MP for Poplar & Limehouse. |
The Lanterns would especially like to thank Barclays for donating a full Protective Carpet Covering to the space. This Carpet will be invaluable for future productions and functions taking place in the space, that require the Harlequin surface to be protected against sharp objects such as chair legs or Cello spikes that may otherwise cause damage. This facility will give the Lanterns Studio Theatre much more versatility when preparing for future events that can make use of this new feature.![]() Finally I am pleased to reveal the first details of our upcoming events, some taking place in the very near future. Saturday 20th April will bring an evening of Debussy and Mozart followed by a second act of Copland’s “Appalachian Spring Suite for 13 Instruments,” from the newly formed Ensemble Lunaire. Ensemble leader Christopher Atkinson will be conducting the evening alongside Violinist Iain Gibbs, with Mark Gibbs on Viola. The Lanterns is very excited to welcome the Ensemble to the Theatre, and look out for posters and flyers which will be distributed throughout the Lanterns. For tickets, just search “Ensemble Lunaire” on the website, www.wegottickets.com We are also pleased to announce that The Lanterns Studio Theatre will play host to this year’s season from the London Amateur Ballet. Under the Artistic Directorship of founder Tom Linecar-Boulton, this ever growing company of Ballet enthusiasts and amateurs will be holding a set of classes throughout May & June, culminating in an evening performance on 6th June, featuring excerpts from Act II of Giselle, Act III of Raymonda and Coppelia. Following this performance, 29th July – 2nd August will see the “LAB- Summer Intensive” including classes, workshops and virtuosity coaching, with guest teachers yet to be confirmed. This will be the first Ballet Summer Course week taking place in the Lanterns Studio Theatre, and for more information on this and anything of the other events taking place to do with the London Amateur Ballet, please visit their website. www.londonamateurballet.com For any further information or to send in your ideas and thoughts, please do not hesitate to leave me a Facebook message, send me a tweet or drop an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
